Read From The Top
That’s fine. If you want everyone to vote on this though you should send it to them…this only went to me and Wolfe. Two other items. First, I don’t believe the Constitution makes any provisions for a secret ballot, therefore I suggest you announce how each team voted as the votes occur. Not just the results at the end which is nearly the same as a secret ballot. Second, I would still like to have my rebuttal posted on both CARP blogs. You guys are the editors of the blogs and both posted complaints against my trade. I should get a chance to reply in the same exact forum.

From: Bees
It would honestly make me sick to post that response. Use the comment feature.
Let’s take a quick look at some of your outrageousness:
Player Rating G AVG R HR RBI SB
David Murphy, TEX 83.05 70 .282 40 10 47 5
Carlos Quentin, CHW 83.98 66 .269 42 16 54 4
Billy Butler, KC 37.41 53 .263 12 1 18 0
Manny Ramirez, BOS 87.81 67 .296 44 15 49 1
So one of my offers, which you ridicule, without response, is that Billy Butler & David Murphy for Manny Ramirez. First, it was an initial offer, never countered. Second, I submit to you that it was a better offer than what your received from the Creepers. You can see from the numbers that Murphy and Quentin are pretty much similar players. A little more power with Quentin, but less avg. Across the board using sportsline rating’s systems, a wash. Quentin is one next year, Murphy 3. Quentin is one year younger, but I don’t believe Murphy has an injury history. So then you go to the prospects. Billy Butler, let’s call him a prospect because he’s in the minors. Vs. Hellickson & Austin Jackson. “Nobody can guarantee that their minor leaguers are more of a sure thing than anybody else can, so let's stop the whining here and now.” Well, actually, you can hedge your bets very well by drafting people on the verge of the majors. Butler is only 22 and has 500 ML at bats, hitting .282 w/70 RBI (on the Royals). They sent him back to the minors to work on his power stroke. How’s he doing? Off the charts sick:
Omaha (PCL) AAA .403 13 3 10 0 .481 .642 1.123 (OPS)
What’s roadblocking him in KC? 32 year old Ross Gload w/ zero home runs. Gload has as many hits in June game as he did in the entire month of May (six). That is not something to brag about. Gload, who started at the everyday first baseman, is losing a lot of PT because of an ineffective bat. He is nothing more than a risky AL-only Fantasy option at this time.
I’ll grant you that a $10 salary next year makes him risky next year, but all signs point to him getting back on track. Your prospects, you know how I feel, but let’s just say it’s a wash. What’s the difference between the two deals? YOU GET TO KEEP VLADY AND YOUR PICK. From what I understand from the Cheesesteaks, he has examples of this as well. Have you seen the stats on the players I offered you:
Justin Masterson, BOS
In 5 starts, he has 27 Ks in 31 IPs, 3 wins, 4 quality starts, 2.90 ERA and 1.09 WHIP a/g. He’s only $1 and farm eligible next year.
Jered Weaver, ANA
Weaver’s had a rough month, but in spite of that has 6 wins, 1.31 WHIP & 65 Ks. He’s $7 Next year and has career numbers in 3 seasons that are just friggin great:
3 Seasons ERA 3.59, WHIP 1.25
Slowey, Twins minor league player of the year last year. This year, boasts a 1.14 WHIP!!!! If you subtract one game where he gave up 8 runs in 3 IP, his ERA is 3.51.
Kendrick, yes injured for most of first half of the season, but dear God, he’s batting over 300 lifetime. You build teams with players like this.
Shit, Garko is only $7 next year, He’s had a slow start, yes, but he alone has the potential to better than Quentin. Garko is a 27-year-old breakout candidate who has gotten off to a slow start. He's batting .417 (15-for-36) in June, though, so think about getting him active in mixed leagues.
So I told you one offer that was better than the Creepers. I don’t have the time, but I’m quite confident I could make just as strong case for the others.
When I read this, “Really, those are the actual offers.” It actually makes my blood boil. If you ever actually counter my offers, who knows how much better you could have done. I can post your response, but it would make me vomit.
As to #1, below: Irrelevant. Not sure anyone called this the worst trade ever, just recent history. The 2000 trade was approved by a vote of the league. #2: See above, yes you should have taken Murphy + and kept Vlady to trade to someone else. #3: See above. And here’s why I think the league has to step in, for reasons Pierre states below. #4: See above about hedging prospects. You didn’t even get Ian’s good ones. #5: When you acquired Galaragga, his numbers were even sickier. There is no reason why he shouldn’t have been immediately activiated. I actually made you look better by comparing his post-draft numbers, rather than using his year to date numbers. #6: If the league so votes, I will get over it. But I honestly don’t get it. You not only do a disservice to your team by not really testing the market, you’ve actually damaged the league.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Buckos ….
and as for the trade offer you defended here, I didn’t like Butler’s salary or his tendency towards being a DH. And I Iiked Quentin considerably more than I liked Murphy, who is also older.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Bees
It’s silly to suggest that the difference between Quentin, Jackson & Hellickson and Murphy & Butler is you throwing in Vlady and a pick. It’s indefensible and insulting. Please apologize for your last e-mail.
An Angry Bucko Responds
- Let’s end the ridiculousness about calling this “the worst trade in CARP history.” The Brewers trot this line out every time a big trade is made that doesn’t involve his players. The post-draft trade between the Mules and Brewers, after the Tampa-robe-suite draft, which directly lead to the Mules only championship was the worst trade in CARP history. We’ve been talking about it since 2000. If we’re still talking about this one in eight years, then we can have this debate. Until then, the Brewers and Bees hold that title.
- Here’s the preseason write-up on Carlos Quentin: “In the minors, Quentin has proven himself an OPS hog in the mold of Lance Berkman, but he laid an egg in his first full season, even getting demoted for about a month. He suffered a small tear in the labrum of his left shoulder during spring, which might have caused some of his problems -- especially since he fared well in a 166 at-bat trial in 2006. At age 25, Quentin certainly has time to rebound, especially as a full-time outfielder in a great hitter's park in Chicago. Consider Quentin an injury-risk sleeper for almost all leagues in 2008. He has .300-30-100-100 potential long term.” He goes out and delivers on that potential, and everybody craps on him. Whatever. I guess I should have taken Ryan Garko or David Murphy or whatever crap the Brewers would have peddled if they had ever made an offer.
- Here’s the offers I received from the Bees. Somebody please (other that those from Baltimore) tell me which one was better than the one I got from the Creepers. Ryan Garko, Justin Masterson and Jered Weaver for Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez and George Sherrill. Billy Butler and David Murphy for Manny Ramirez. Billy Butler, Howie Kendrick, Justin Masterson and Kevin Slowey for Vladimir Guerrero and Alex Rodriguez. Really, those are the actual offers.
- As for the prospects – they are called prospects for a reason. Nobody knows if they will pan out -- sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. I’ll take my chances with Hellickson and Jackson and put them on my farm roster, just like all the minor leaguers on every other CARP roster. Nobody can guarantee that their minor leaguers are more of a sure thing than anybody else can, so let’s stop the whining here and now.
- Finally, on the attack about whether I should have been starting Gallaraga over Hernandez. Hernandez has been spotty at times, but Gallaraga has also missed a few starts. Its easy to look back now and see that Galaraga has better numbers – but hindsight is always 20-20. That was a cheap shot.
- For all those that are bitching and whining – you sound worse than my six year old when I won’t buy her candy at the market. Get over it, you sound like a bunch of crying little babies.

What The Hell Was He Thinking?
"Oh Albert, it's not that bad," you say. Oh my little friend, it is. Buchanan has been paying zero attention to this team and then pops his head up and makes one of the worst trades in years without so much as testing the market. Case in point, what would be his 2nd or 3rd best pitcher (based on year to date stats) and a decent pitcher on anyone's staff has never pitched an active inning since being acquired in a supplemental draft. It's true, look it up. Armando Galarraga since being acquired (not including closers) ranks during the same time period (props to sportsline for letting Albert crunch these numbers) 2nd in WHIP, Tied for 3rd in Wins, 4th in Ks, & 5th in ERA on the Buckos. In other words, with Galarraga on the bench, the Buckos sent out Livan Hernandez and during this same period he racked up the following stats: 3 Wins, 3 Losses, 6.37 ERA, 1.84 WHIP & 15 Ks (in 53 2/3 IP!!). Galarraga during the same period, 3 Wins, 2 Losses, 4.69 ERA, 1.24 WHIP & 26 Ks (in 40 IP). "That's not SOOOO bad, Albert." But it is, consider during this time period, the following other players were active, Betancourt 9.00 ERA, 1.88 WHIP (17 IP); Millwood 7.07 ERA, 1.71 WHIP (28 IP). Why wasn't Galarraga activated immediately after being be drafted 2nd overall in the 1st Supplemental? Why hasn't he been activated since then? Asleep at the wheel.
But back to addressing his pitching needs. "But Albert, he got this stud minor league prospect named Hellickson." Here's what some of the scouts/pundits say, "" "As for the current projection, I think Hellickson could be an effective big leaguer right now, but the inconsistent curve (lack of feel) and flashes of inconsistency (feel and mechanical inconsistency) would make him more of a 5th starter or middle reliever for the time being. He should certainly be in the minors for a number of reasons, but should also be (and probably will be) in Double-A for some time this season." -ETA 2010, projects #3 Starter. "Still, unless he can get better and more consistent results with his breaking balls, he's likely to end up in the bullpen sooner or later." "But Albert, those reviews were probably written before the season started, before he became en fuego." Well consider this, in 3 out of his last 4 starts, has been 4.50, 5.40 & 7.20. Class A is catching up with him, my little friends. To be fair, Albert will note that his last start was a 7K, 0 H performance in 5 IP, but "Hellickson is still probably two years away and most likely will spend the bulk of his season at High Class A Vero Beach, but he is leader of the next group of arms behind the more advanced Price, McGee, Davis, Niemann, and Talbot." That's quite a group to be behind. Oh well, Buchanan still has Arod to trade, I can see it now, $2 Iwamura, $1 Chavez & Daniel Cortes for Arod and a Pick.

Lines o' the Day 5/19/08
Matt Wieters tears cure cancer.
1. Mike Napoli, Hogs, 3/4, 2hr, 5rbi, 2r. The best C in the state of California, AL only.
2. David, "Big Poppy", Ortiz, Hogs, 3/5, 2hr, 4rbi, 2r. All Hogs, all the time? How can they be in last?
Bad dog:
1. Bobby Abreu, Pirates, 0/4, k. Why? The rest of the 1st place Pirates hit .395 with 3hr, 8rbi, 15r and a sb.
2. Cliff Lee, Buckos, L, 5.7ip, 5er, 10h, bb, 2k. You suck Lee, you suck balls, I hate you. Man, that felt good.
Prospect watch:
Matt Wieters will destroy your team and lead me to the title one day. Stats thus far in High-A Carolina league:
.338, 11hr, 29rbi, 29r, .618slg, 1.037ops. Kneel.

I'm Not Dead
I promise daily posts from this day on, or at least until the next jury. There will be no more children.
BTW, CC fills out his uniform nicely, no? He would look good on your CARP team.

Blow It Up!
What happened? The season for the Brewers looked so promising. CC, Percival & Matsui at the draft. Kinsler in a trade. Bounce back years from Hafner and Mauer. Young guns Shields, Kennedy and Loewen to solidify the rotation.
Nothing. 5 weeks in and the Brewers were sitting in 7th with 37pts. Could I have turned things around...maybe. But there are no guarentees that CC would return to CC 2007, that Hafner, Delmon and Mauer would remember how to hit HR. When the Wolfe came calling and dangled Sizemore and McGowen I had to pull the trigger.
I guess its as much of a relief as it is painful to watch another CARP season go down the tubes. No more dying with each days stats. Just relax and begin preparing for my FF draft in 3 months.
BTW, CC on the block.

Back from the Break
For now, just a quick line of the day and a promise, Pretenders start this week. (Any doubt that Debbie Clemens didn't do roids?)
The Good:
- Jack Cust, Pirates, 4/4, HR, rbi, 3r. Breaks out of 0-April slump.
- Alex Rios, Creepers, 3/5, HR, rbi, 2r, sb. Power and speed combo.

Good:
1. Andy Sonnestine, Steaks, CG Shutout W, 3h, bb, 4k.
2. Ervin Santana, Bees, W, 8ip, 3h, obb, 8k, 1er.

Ian Kennedy, 2.7ip, 5h, 5bb, 4k, 4er.
Golf Tourney: 63 (-7) in scramble format. Good for 4th out of 36 groups. Easily put away 12 beers. Crushing the new driver.

Line o' the Day 4/19/08
Golf tournament today, probably a lot of swings that look like this.
1. Richie Sexson, Hogs, 2/4, 2HR, 4rbi, 2r. Thanks Richie, when you cost $36 you couldn't hit your weight for me.
2. Bobby Crosby, Money, 3/4, HR, 5rbi, 3r. I can't even think of anything to say, this line makes me so angry.
Buckos get their second DUI of the year:
Cliff Lee, W (3-0), 8ip, 2h, bb, 8k, Bench. Glad you got that Mussina start in there Dave. Best part is the drubbing Lee takes as soon as he is activated next week.
And the not so good:
Brian Bannister, Hogs, L, 5ip, 9h, bb, k, 5er. ERA goes from 0.86 to 2.42. Come on? Who did you think this guy was, the second coming of Bob Gibson?
Friday, April 18, 2008
Line o' the Day 4/18/08
JUST A REMINDER: THE PRETENDERS ARE COMING
Albert likes:
1. Man Ram, Buckos, 3/5, 2hr, 3rbi, 3r, one missed head shot.
2. Carlos Quentin, Creepers, 2/3, 2hr, 2rbi, 3r. I don't know how to explain this line.
Albert wants to stalk:
1. Paul Konerko, Steaks, 0/5, 2k. Golden shower sombrero, .176 for the year.
2. Boof Bonser, Brewers, L, 4ip, 7h, 2bb, 0k, 6er. What else is new for the Brewer's starting rotation?
Thursday, April 17, 2008
Line of the Day 4/1708
Good:
1. Edgar Rentaria, Steaks, 3/4, HR, 5rbi, r. Proving that he really did deserve that big K the Sox gave him......in 2005.
2. Felix Hernandez, Brewers, W, CG, 8h, BB, 8k. 1.47 era for the year.
We won't call this the bad, let's call it the CC:
1. CC Sabathia, L, 4ip, 9er, 8h, 4bb, k. Season era 13.50, 2.56 whip. 14/14 bb/k ratio. Did you guys know that he cost $48 at the draft. No, really $48.

Applebee's -- The Ruiner
Just a little off topic, but ABF does deal with more than just baseball. Applebee's might be the worst national chain going. The American way is to take a decent idea, a giant hardware store (Home Depot), the local video store (Blockbuster), make it sterile and bland and mass market it. Listen, I'm not totally opposed to this idea. I have been to Chili's. Its not so bad. Decent bar food, sports on the TV, its not your local bar, but in a pinch it does just fine.
That's why I don't get Applebee's. They take the "fake local bar" to a new level. Of course that level includes destroying everything you might go to a bar for. For example, here in my home city of Philly they put in a new Applebee's near my office. I had a bad experience in the past, (my first Applebee experience consisted of being told that they only cook their burgers "well done". What the fuck is the point of that? If you are that worried about being sued, don't sell burgers), but one day I decided to give it a shot.
Mid-week afternoon lunch, baseball game, just looking for some food, maybe a beer or two while I catch some baseball. I walk in and the place is deserted. Empty. I sit by myself near the bar. Cheerful waitress takes my order, miller lite draft and a chicken sandwich (avoiding the burger for the aforementioned reason). Not too difficult, right?
The bar is huge, but not a single flat screen in sight. One or two old tv's with the sound off. Blaring through the speakers is muzak, not even crappy soft-rock radio, muzak. On the table is one of those inventions that lets you hear the tv, its like a wireless radio, but I have to turn up the volume so loud its annoying.
Ah, here comes the beer. Practically room temp. Not so tasty for miller lite. It tasted like warm, soapy crap. At this point its too late to run because my food has come out in appox. 3 mins. Not a good sign. The chicken is rubbery and almost seems undercooked. The fries have clearly been sitting under a heat lamp most of the day. The killer? The beer is $4 and the sandwich is $8.99!
The strangest thing is the Mgr. comes over, as I am the only customer in the place, and asks how everything is. I didn't have the energy or time to list how pathetic the whole meal was. Anyway, what I don't understand is how a place like Applebee's exists? Are there people who live in places where this is the only option? Is my experience unique? What person with any other options, and I am including a hot dog cart and forty on the street, would ever go there?

Psychic Move of the Week
Here at ABF we like to point out the failings of CARP GM's, but that's not what we are all about. So in that spirit, let us recognize the Psychic Move of the Week.
GM Welshans of the Steaks has been accused by some of not always paying the closest attention to his team, but this week he wins the magic 8 ball prize.
Joe Borowski led the AL in saves last year, despite an era north of 4. He started 08 with a perfect inning and his first save but had a shakey outing followed by yet another perfect inning. Welshans saw the writing on the wall and benched him for the week thus saving his staff this ugly line last night against the Red Sox:
.7ip 4h, 3er.
Nice job Rich, we here at ABF salute you.
* Per Rotoworld at 2pm, Borowski now on the 15 Day DL.
Sunday, April 13, 2008
Line of the Day 4/13/08
The Good:
1. Manny Ramirez, Buckos, 2/4 HR, 3rbi, 2r. Manny being on a contract year.
2. Roy Halladay, Creepers, W, CG, 9ip, 6h, bb, 6k. Still looks like a sheep fucker.
The Bad:
1. Fausto Carmona, Steaks, L, 3.3ip, 2h, 8bb, k. Cash that signing bonus now.
2. David Ortiz, Hogs, 0/4, k. Now 3/43, 3rbi, 10k on the season.

Bucko GM -- Asleep at the Wheel
I'm not talking about running into the ocean headfirst with your cellphone and camera, I'm talking about this:
Gerald Laird, Buckos, 4/5, 2hr, 6rbi, 3r.....on the bench.
Salty, AAA, active.
OUCH.

Bad Managing 101
Unlike in fantasy football, the manager/coach in fantasy baseball can play a significant role in the success or demise of your fantasy team. Even in the AL, where all a manager really does is fill out a lineup and make calls to the pen, idiots like Gardenhire can doom a promising season by stubbornly refusing to play young players.
Gardenhire is just the best example of the worst type of manager you see in the AL. He will at any cost start an aging/crappy vet for weeks and months even when there a is better/younger alternative on his bench. Example you say?
Coming into 08' the Twins were looking to rebuild. They refused to give Santana huge $$ and traded him to the Mets for some decent prospects. They even gave the CF job to a 22 yr old rookie with all of 140abs in AAA, Carlos Gomez. Cuddyer and Delmon Young occupied the other OF spots, leaving open the DH/4th OF spot for one player. Gardenhire had to give those 550abs to one of 2 players:
Player A: Age 25, 07' 418ab .273 13hr 65rbi 49r .787 ops
Second Half 07': .292 8hr 39rbi 28r .870 ops
Player B: Age 31, 07' 392ab .219 12hr 59rbi 53r .638 ops
Second Half 07': .199 3hr 18rbi 13r .537 ops
Which player does Gardenhire start on opening day? You guessed it, Player B.
Player B is Craig Monroe, A is Jason Kubel. Now Kubel is still coming back from knee surgery and Monroe is a right hand bat (Kubel is a lefty), so I can understand that you might start Monroe against lefties, but Gardenhire was giving Monroe the majority of the ABS??!?
The results:
Monroe: 1/11, 0hr, rbi, 0r, 5k, 2bb.
Kubel: 4/14, hr, 2rbi, 3r, 2k, bb
Now the injury to Cuddyer has saved Kubel temporarily because Gardenhire has to play him, but jesus christ, how the fuck does Ron Gardenhire continue to be employed? I don't even want to talk about the even split than Terry Francona is subjecting me to between Crisp and Ellsbury right now.
Saturday, April 5, 2008
Line of the Day 4/5/08
1. Shawn Marcum, Steaks, W, 7ip, 3h, bb, 8k. Toronto for real?
2. AJ Pierzynski, Pirates, 3/5, HR, 5rbi, 2r. The man you love to hate, AJ, not Hirsch.
The Bad:
1. Ian Kennedy, Brewers, L, 2.3ip, 4h, 4bb, 6er, 23.14era, 3.43 whip. Not the same as pitching against Washington St.
Friday, April 4, 2008
Line of the Day 4/4/08
1. Zach Greinke, Creepers, W, 7ip, 1er, 6h, 2bb, 3k. Maybe Zach can think of this start to chase the demons away when they come at night.
2. Joe Mauer, Brewers, 2/3, 2rbi, r. No power....yet.
Lots of hitters going 0/4 out there so....
1. Kevin Slowey, Bees, L, 3.3ip, 3er, 4h, 2k. Left with injury. Where is Sidney Ponson when you need him?
You want analysis? Coming this weekend the bane of the Fantasy GM, the Crappy Manager.
Thursday, April 3, 2008
Line of the Day 4/3/08
1. Aubrey Huff, Money, 2/4, HR, 4rbi, 2r. Yeah, he called Baltimore a shithole, so what? Don't you watch The Wire?
2. Brian Bannister, Hogs, W, 7ip, 2h, 0bb, 4k. Against the Tigers? Put this in the "what the fuck?" file.
Albert no like:
1. The Steaks offense. Sorry to call out a whole team. 8/38, .210, 0hr, 1rbi, 1r.
2. Daniel Cabrera, Buckos, L, 4ip, 6er, 6h, 5bb, 13.50era, 2.75whip. He's gonna break out any year now. What happened to Leo Mazzone's magic touch?

Creeper and Steak Prospects to DL
PRICE & JENNINGS HURT
Where else do you get breaking CARP news? CARP Notes? That blog sucks. The last entry was the final standings from October?
Anyway, per Baseball America:
Fans in Vero Beach hoping to see two of baseball’s best prospects take the field for the Rays’ high Class A affiliate will have to wait at least a month.
Lefthander David Price will be out for five more weeks after coming down with a strained left elbow last week, and now outfielder Desmond Jennings will miss about a month with a back injury. The injury for Jennings is his second within the past year. In August, Jennings’ 2007 season ended early when he had arthroscopic surgery to repair the lateral meniscus in his knee.
Albert Belle -- Bad Boyfriend
This is from the Washington Post, Aug. 25, 2006. GPS tracking? Don't ever fucking cheat on me!
"Former major league slugger Albert Belle was sentenced to three months in jail and five years of supervised probation yesterday in Phoenix for stalking his ex-girlfriend.
Superior Court Judge James Keppel warned Belle that if he contacts the victim again he will go to prison.Belle's former girlfriend told police in January that she discovered a Global Positioning System tracking device that had fallen off her car and that Belle had threatened her."
Lines o' the Day 4/2/08
1. Vladdy Daddy, Buckos, 3/4, 3rbi, r. Well for $49 what else would you expect?
2. DiceK, Pirates, W(1-0), 6.7ip, 2h, 9k. "Ahh, me ritch slap A's"
Duds:
1. Travis Buck, Money, 0/4, 4k. Ok Travis, regular season has started, you can stop sucking now.
2. JJ Putz, Hogs, BS, 1ip, 2h, bb, 2er. Blown saves make Albert Belle cry.
Tuesday, April 1, 2008

2. Frank Guiterrez, Creepers, 3/3, hr, 3rbi, 2r. Remember when he was trade for Milton?
Albert Belle no like:
